A bit about Rockstart
Rockstart launched in 2011 in Amsterdam as one of Europe’s first startup accelerators. Today, Rockstart is an international company that supports and empowers the best startups on their way to success across four domains: Energy, Health, AgriFood, and Emerging technologies. We provide startups with access to the capital, market, community, and expertise by connecting them to partners, investors, mentors and the wider Rockstart network.
Rockstart also creates programs that are customized to boost collaboration between startups and corporates, driving faster access to co-creation, commercial partnerships, and investment. Rockstart has experience in designing and executing programs for Maersk, Shell, Dutch Ministry of Health, and many others.
Since its inception, Rockstart has invested in more than 150 startups and supported them in their journey to raise more than €87 million and hire more than 700 people. The legal talent we are looking for has experience in startup funding and M&A, loves a fast-paced international environment and is able to provide both Rockstart and its “alumni startups” (startups that graduated from our accelerator programs) with solid, pragmatic and hands-on legal support and advice. As Rockstart’s Legal Associate, you are involved in a wide variety of projects, ranging from transaction management and execution, legal due diligence, startup financing and venture capital, exits, legal affairs and processes. You love to be the spider in the web when working with various parties on a day to day basis, ranging from entrepreneurs to investors, to all kinds of startup experts (lawyers, tax advisors, notaries). You work as a key member of our Investment Management team, closely with our Investment lead, Legal Counsel, and Legal & Compliance Support, Finance and Fund teams to create and maintain smooth legal processes and protect Rockstart’s interests.
Your main responsibilities will be:
Managing Rockstart’s alumni portfolio and keeping its reporting and legal file systems up to date;
Coordinating with the Rockstart team and management on the progress of the alumni startups
Acting as a mentor/advisor to startups on a variety of legal matters;
Liaising and managing relationships with external law firms and startup advisors;
Supporting startup funding and M&A transactions, including reviewing and commenting on legal documentation on behalf of Rockstart; Coordinating signing and closing processes;
Making connections between startups and advisors/specialists and maintaining the Rockstart.me platform (i.a. contributing blog posts, organizing expert sessions, drafting legal templates and sharing relevant startup news updates);
Assisting Rockstart’s legal team with any other legal matters (e.g. corporate, IP, employment and general contract law) relating to the Rockstart group, the accelerator programs and/or the alumni startups.
What makes you the perfect candidate?
You have a thorough understanding of what it takes for startups to succeed. You love startups and speak their language. You are a detail freak, always spotting the small improvements or mistakes. You love to deep dive into a challenging transaction but in the end you’re pragmatic and resourceful and just get things done. You’re confident in your skills and knowledge, a master at prioritizing and you realize that speed is of the essence in order for startups to be successful. You have strong negotiation skills and are able to explain legal terms to others in clear, concise terms. You have a proactive, results-oriented attitude with an ability to work effectively in a dynamic, ever-changing environment.
Must have requirements:
Master’s degree in Dutch corporate law;
4+ years of relevant working experience, of which a significant proportion as a lawyer at an (international) law firm;
Experience in negotiating commercial and strategic deal terms;
In-depth knowledge of corporate law and M&A;
Experience with venture capital and the various phases of startup funding; and
Excellent command of Dutch and English (written and verbal).
Availability: 40 hours per week.
Duration: This is a long-term position. We’ll start with a temporary contract.
